Spanish Photographer Stripped Of Wildlife

LONDON (AFP): A Spanish photographer was stripped of a major wildlife prize Wednesday after organisers in London said it was likely that the apparently wild wolf featured in his entry picture was tame.

Jose Luis Rodriguez won the highly prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition in October with a stunning picture of a wolf leaping over a gate entitled "The Storybook Wolf".

However, doubts were raised about the wolf's provenance and following an investigation, the Natural History Museum in London and BBC Worldwide, who jointly run the prize, said the entry had been disqualified.

"It saddens us to confirm that after a careful and thorough investigation into the image 'The Storybook Wolf', the co-owners of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition... have disqualified the winning entry of the photographer Jose Luis Rodriguez," they said in a statement.

"The judging panel was reconvened and concluded that it was likely that the wolf featured in the image was an animal model that can be hired for photographic purposes."

Rodriguez "strongly denies" that the wolf in the image is tame, it said.

The competition rules clearly state that photographs of tame animals may not be entered and any transgression "is taken very seriously", it added.

The 10,000-pound (16,300-dollar, 11,500-euro) prize was never awarded to the photographer although he did receive 500 pounds for winning his category, which organisers said they had agreed he could keep in lieu of royalty payments.

As a result of his disqualification, there will be no 2009 winner.

Thousands feared dead in Haiti quake

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI: (Wed, 13th Jan) Bodies littered the streets of Haiti's devastated capital Wednesday after a powerful earthquake that may have killed thousands from shantytowns to luxury hotels and even the presidential palace.

With victims pinned under debris and powerful aftershocks rattling the country, looting broke out soon after the 7.0 magnitude quake which spared no part of the capital Port-au-Prince, which was close to the epicentre.

Injured residents of the crowded city poured into the streets screaming in panic with each new tremor. Many bodies were just left in the streets or crushed under debris.

The quake toppled the cupola on the gleaming white presidential palace, a major hotel where 200 tourists were missing and the headquarters of the UN mission in Haiti where up to 250 personnel were unaccounted for.

The head of the force was among those missing.

Jordan reported that three of its peacekeepers were killed and 21 wounded in the quake, the most powerful to hit the country in more than a century.

Eight Chinese peacekeepers were buried in rubble and 10 were missing, China's state media said.

Estimates of the death toll ranged from hundreds to thousands but with every hour passing it was becoming clear that the destruction and loss of life was catastrophic.

A major international relief operation was set underway with the United States, France, Britain and other countries promising help.

Two hundred foreigners were missing at the Hotel Montana, French Secretary of State for Cooperation Alain Joyandet said.

'We know there were 300 people inside the hotel when it collapsed, only around 100 have got out, which greatly concerns us,' Joyandet told French radio.

A hospital in the suburb of Petionville collapsed, as did ministries, schools, homes in luxury districts and hillside shanties, businesses and markets.

Police, UN and Red Cross vehicles tried to ferry the wounded to hospital, but progress was slow as roads were torn up by the powerful ripples from the quake.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported 27 strong aftershocks hit the country in the hours after the initial 2153 GMT quake.

USGS geophysicist Susan Potter said the last earthquake of such magnitude to strike Haiti was in 1897, and possibly as far back as 1770.

Sara Fajardo of Catholic Relief Services told AFP that buildings across the street from their headquarters collapsed, and that staff were terrified the aftershocks would topple more buildings.

'Most of the Catholic Relief Services staff is going to be sleeping on the CRS office compound but they're sleeping outside because they're too afraid to sleep indoors out of safety concerns,' Fajardo said.

'The center of Port-au-Prince has been destroyed, it's a catastrophe,' wailed a man named Pierre, so traumatized he could hardly speak as he surveyed the disaster.

Haiti's ambassador to the United States, Raymond Alcide Joseph, described the quake to CNN as 'a catastrophe of major proportions.'

Haiti's ambassador to Mexico, Robert Manuel, told reporters that Haitian President Rene Preval and his wife 'are alive and well' but did not provide further information on them.

The headquarters of the UN mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), which has served as a peacekeeping mission since 2004, was destroyed. 'There are numerous people underneath the rubble, both dead and injured,' a local employee said.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon was to meet top advisors on Wednesday to decide how to respond to the emergency.

Nations around the world offered aid and the United States, France, Canada and governments across Latin America geared to send help, while the international Red Cross mobilised relief supplies from Panama.

US President Barack Obama said 'My thoughts and prayers go out to those who have been affected by this earthquake.'

Pope Benedict XVI urged a generous response to the catastrophe. The pope lamented Haiti's 'tragic situation (involving) huge loss of human life, a great number of homeless and missing and considerable material damage.'

Former Haitian president Jean Bertrand Aristide, exiled in South Africa since his 2004 ouster called it a 'tragedy that defies expression.'

Aid group World Vision said it would begin distributing first aid kits, blankets and potable water to survivors on Wednesday.

This 'is especially devastating in Haiti, where people are acutely vulnerable because of poor infrastructure and extreme poverty,' Edward Brown, World Vision's US relief director, said in a statement.

Already the poorest nation in the Americas, Haiti has been hit by a series of recent disasters.

Three hurricanes and a tropical storm pounded Haiti in 2008, killing 793 people and leaving more than 300 others missing, according to government figures.

The country was also gripped by a political standoff in 2008 amid riots over skyrocketing food prices. UN troops are a regular sight in the country.

Seventy percent of Haiti's population lives on less than two dollars per day, and half of its 8.5 million people are unemployed.

Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) pass

SINGAPORE: Singaporeans who travel frequently to Malaysia can now "fast track" through immigration.

If they have recently entered Malaysia at least four times in a month, they can apply for a special pass which allows clearance through either Woodlands (above) or Tuas checkpoint without having to fill up the white immigration card.

With the Malaysia Automated Clearance System (MACS) pass — a sticker embedded with a Radio Frequency Identification chip that is stuck in the passport — they can zip through immigration clearance in Malaysia without worrying if their passport has been stamped.

All details will be captured electronically at the autogates.

The scheme was launched in July last year but only made available to Singaporean frequent travellers last month.

The hope is that more Singaporeans will visit Johor, said director of Tourism Malaysia Zalizam Zakaria at a briefing on Thursday.

Some 12.7 million Singaporeans visited Malaysia last year — nearly 54 per cent of the country’s total visitorship figures.

The MACS pass costs RM30 (S$12.50) and is valid for one year. Spouses and children of frequent travellers can also apply for the pass.

For application details, visit http://www.imi.gov.my/

3 Churches Attacked In 'Allah' Dispute

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Assailants attacked three Malaysian churches with firebombs Friday, extensively damaging one amid a growing conflict over the use of the word "Allah" by non-Muslims, officials said.

The attacks sharply escalated tensions in the Muslim-majority country ahead of planned protests by Muslims later Friday against a Kuala Lumpur High Court verdict which struck down a 3-year-old ban on non-Muslims using "Allah" in their literature.

"I condemn these actions because they will destroy our country's harmony," Prime Minister Najib Razak told reporters. "The government will take whatever steps it can to prevent such acts."

Najib said he has told the national police chief to step up security at churches and other places of worship.

The Dec. 31 court decision incensed many Muslims, who see it as a threat to their religion. Hateful comments and threats against Christians have been posted widely on the Internet, but this is the first time the controversy has turned destructive.

The ruling was on a petition by Malaysia's Roman Catholic Church, whose main publication, the Herald, uses the word Allah in its Malay-language edition.

The first-floor office in the three-story Metro Tabernacle Church was destroyed in a blaze a little after midnight, said Kevin Ang, a spokesman for the Protestant church. The worship areas on the upper two floors were undamaged and there were no injuries.

Kuala Lumpur police Chief Mohamad Sabtu Osman told The Associated Press that a witness saw four people on two motorcycles breaking the glass front of the church and throwing an incendiary object inside before fleeing.

He said police found a wrench, an empty gasoline can and two scorched motorcycle helmets at the scene. The church occupies a corner plot in a row of shops in Desa Melawati, a suburb of Kuala Lumpur.

"We are still investigating," he said. He also urged Muslims not to participate in the planned protests.

Separately, Molotov cocktails were thrown into the compounds of two other churches before dawn, causing minor damage in one and none in the other, church officials said.

The Rev. Lawrence Andrew, the editor of the Herald, said many churches have employed extra security guards. "Most churches are taking precautions. They are aware it may just blow up," he said.

The government has appealed the court verdict and the High Court has suspended its decision's implementation until the appeal is heard.

Muslims argue that "Allah" is exclusive to Islam, and its use by Christians would confuse Muslims and tempt them to convert to Christianity.

About 60 percent of Malaysia's 28 million people are Malay Muslims, while the rest are ethnic Chinese, Indians and indigenous tribes. The minorities follow Christianity, Hinduism and other religions.

The Malay-speaking indigenous tribespeople, living in remote states of Sabah and Sarawak, are the main readers of the Herald's Malay-language edition. Catholic officials say "Allah" is the only word they know for God.

Many Muslims in Malaysia have refused to accept the argument that "Allah" is an Arabic word that predates Islam, and that it is used by Christians in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Lebanon and Indonesia regularly in their worship.

The backlash against the court verdict has reinforced complaints by minorities that they face institutional discrimination by the government.

On Thursday, the Malaysian judiciary's Web site was hacked and defaced with an apparent threat to Christians, The Star newspaper reported. The site, however, appeared to be normal on Friday.

The Star said the hacker, using the alias "Brainwash," defaced the site with a banner saying: "Mess with the best, die like the rest" and "Allah only restricted to Muslim only."

Mobile Phone Use, Reverse Alzheimer's

WASHINGTON (AFP): Long suspected of causing brain tumors, mobile phones are now being eyed as key allies in the fight against Alzheimer's disease, US researchers said Wednesday in a study.

Researchers at the University of South Florida (USF) found, to their surprise, that 96 mice they zapped twice daily for an hour each time with electromagnetic waves similar to those generated by US mobile (cellular) phones benefited from the exposure.

Long-term exposure to the electromagnetic waves in mobile phones wiped out deposits of beta-amyloid -- a protein fragment that accumulates in the brain of Alzheimer's sufferers to form the disease's signature plaques -- in older mice and improved their memories, the study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease showed.

Young adult mice with no apparent signs of memory impairment were protected against Alzheimer's disease after several months' exposure to the mobile phone waves, and the memories of normal mice with no genetic predisposition for Alzheimer's disease were boosted after exposure to the electromagnetic waves.

No one was more surprised than the researchers themselves, who had embarked on the tests several years ago, convinced they would show "that the electromagnetic fields from a cell phone would be deleterious to Alzheimer's mice," lead author Gary Arendash, a USF professor, told AFP.

"When we got our initial results showing a beneficial effect, I thought, 'Give it a few more months and it will get bad for them.'

"It never got bad. We just kept getting these beneficial effects in both the Alzheimer's and normal mice," Arendash said.

It took several months of exposure before the benefits were seen in mice, and that would be the equivalent of many years in humans, Arendash said.

The mice in the study didn't wear tiny headsets or have scientists holding mobile phones up to their ears. Instead, their cages were arranged around an antenna that generated a mobile phone signal.

Each animal was housed the same distance from the antenna and exposed to electromagnetic waves equivalent to what is typically emitted by a mobile phone pressed up against a human head.

"Since we selected electromagnetic parameters that were identical to human cell phone use and tested mice in a task closely analogous to a human memory test, we believe our findings could have considerable relevance to humans," Arendash said.

But William Thies, chief medical and scientific officer of the Alzheimer's Association, said the study was "very preliminary" and warned against self-medicating by over-using a cell phone.

"No one should feel they are being protected from Alzheimer's, dementia, cognitive decline by using their cell phones based on this study," Thies said in a statement.

The study "needs to be replicated in animals before we begin to even consider trying it in people, as animal models of Alzheimer's and people with the disease are very different," he said.

The researchers concurred that more research is needed to find out, among other things, what the optimal "dosage" of electromagnetic waves would be -- the 918 megaHerz in US mobile phones, 800 megaHerz in European phones, or another frequency -- and how long "treatment" would have to be given before benefits are seen.

"If we can determine the best set of electromagnetic parameters to effectively prevent beta-amyloid aggregation and remove pre-existing beta amyloid deposits from the brain, this technology could be quickly translated to human benefit against Alzheimer's disease," said USF professor Chuanhai Cao.

But, warned the Alzheimer's Association, just because something works in mice with Alzheimer's, doesn't mean it will work in humans.

"Therapies that have been 'successful' in mouse models of Alzheimer's have not worked in people," Thies said.

The potential new, non-invasive and drug-free therapy could also be used to treat one of the invisible injuries suffered by soldiers in war, Cao said.

"Since production and aggregation of beta-amyloid occurs in traumatic brain injury, particularly in soldiers during war, the therapeutic impact of our findings may extend beyond Alzheimer's disease," he said.

Alzheimer's Disease International, which groups Alzheimer associations around the world, has predicted that around 36 million people will be living with dementia this year.

Pentagon officials have said that up to 360,000 US veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan may have suffered brain injuries.

Astagfirullahalazim.......

Assalamualaikum...

Tali tu pendek jer. Jadi dia bergantungan di tengah-tengah perigi.

Di mulut perigi, harimau yg lapar tu menunggunya. . Si hamba Allah ni pun berfikirlah macam mana nak menyelamatkan diri, sambil berdoa kepada Allah agar dia diselamatkan. Tengah dok berfikir camner nak selamat, tetiba dengar bunyi kocakan air di bawah perigi...

Aaaaa!!!!... Ya Allah..... lagilah seram dibuatnya. Nak tahu ada apa kat bawah tu? Ada 2 ekor buaya yg kelaparan.. Apalah nasib.

Sampai kat atas tikus tu gigit tali tu pulak. Cis, kurang ajar punya tikus. Alahhhh... cam ner ni. Pas tu, keluar lagi seekor tikus yg berwarna hitam. Naik mengikut tali tadi, cit!cit! cit!cit! sampai kat atas.Tikus hitam ni pun gigit juga tali tu. Cis, lagi satu... Macam mana aku nak buat ni... habislah jadi mangsa buaya.
Berfikir lagi.... Kalau naik kat atas makan dek harimau...
Hamba Allah tu kata, "Fuh manisnya madu ni , tak pernah ku rasa manisnya ni. Sedapnya. Subhanallah sungguh sedap ni." kerana setitik madu si hamba Allah tu lupa pada harimau yg sedang menantinya di mulut perigi dan buaya yg menantinya di bawah
Kalau semua nak tahu ...
si Hamba Allah itu adalah kita semua.. Harimau yg mengejar tu adalah maut kita, ajal memang sentiasa mengejar kita, so beringat - ingatlah. 2 ekor

Step 2:
Hayatilah sedalamnya akan makna ayat demi ayat, perkataan demi perkataan

Step 3:

2 Malaysian Charged

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: A Malaysian court Wednesday charged an air force sergeant and a businessman with stealing two fighter jet engines, which were apparently smuggled to South America.

The theft of the two engines from a military warehouse two years ago was publicized last month by a local daily newspaper, prompting opposition criticism that senior government or military figures may have been involved and the case covered up.

Royal Malaysian Air Force Sgt. N. Tharmendran pleaded not guilty in court in central Selangor state to stealing the engines, said a court official, who declined to be named citing protocol. The charge carries a maximum jail term of 10 years.

In the same court, Rajandra Prasad Kasy, director of a local company dealing in aeronautical products, pleaded not guilty to a charge of helping to conceal the engines, for which he faces up to seven years in prison, said his lawyer Pritam Singh.

The court set bail at 150,000 ringgit ($44,000) for each of the men, the court official said. The next court date is Feb. 11.

The engines, each worth 50 million ringgit ($14 million), were stolen while undergoing repairs, according to Attorney General Abdul Gani Patail. He has said that the stolen engines were shipped toward Argentina before being offloaded to another vessel bound for Uruguay.

The engines are used for single-seat fighter and reconnaissance jets and Abdul Gani has declined to say where they are now.

The New Straits Times first reported the theft of one of the engines last month, fueling criticism of corruption. Lim Kit Siang, a senior opposition politician, has called for a royal inquiry into "rampant kleptocracy in Malaysia," expressing disbelief that a low-ranking staff could pull off the theft.

He said Abdul Gani's claim that no senior military personnel was involved was hard to believe.

Alert On Internet Love Scam

Singapore: SEVERAL women here have been conned in an online love scam involving Internet dating websites.

A police alert, which went out on Friday, said that after befriending the victims, the foreign men would claim they are coming here to visit the woman or to ask for her hand in marriage.

On the day he is supposed to arrive, he will call her to say that he has been detained by the Singapore authorities for carrying excessive cash.

The men will then beg for a transfer of a sum of money to a foreign bank account to secure their release. Once the cash is in, all contact will cease.

Police investigations have revealed that there were no such persons on any flight, vessel or bus entering Singapore that day.

Those with information on such scams should call the police hotline: 1800-255 0000, or 999 if urgent police action is required.

1900s Plane Found In Antarctica

ADELAIDE, Australia: Remains of the first airplane ever taken to Antarctica, in 1912, have been found by Australian researchers, the team announced.

The Mawson's Huts Foundation had been searching for the plane for three summers before stumbling upon metal pieces of it on New Year's Day.

"The biggest news of the day is that we've found the air tractor, or at least parts of it!" team member Tony Stewart wrote on the team's blog from Cape Denison in Antarctica's Commonwealth Bay.

Australian polar explorer and geologist Douglas Mawson led two expeditions to Antarctica in the early 1900s, on the first one bringing along a single-propeller Vickers plane. The wings of the plane, built in 1911, had been damaged in a crash before the expedition, but Mawson hoped to use it as a kind of motorized sled.

Stewart said the 1911-14 Australian Antarctic Expedition used the plane to tow gear onto the ice in preparation for their sledging journeys.

But the plane's engine could not withstand the extreme temperatures and it was eventually abandoned.

The plane, the first from Britain's Vickers factory, had not been seen since the mid-1970s, when researchers photographed the steel fuselage nearly encompassed in ice.

The foundation - which works at Cape Denison to conserve the huts used by Mawson in his expeditions - believed the plane would still be where it was left by Mawson, near the huts and the harbor, which is covered in ice for most of the year.
